On Tap for 2012

2011 was a big year for art, music, and culture in The City of Trees and it doesn't look like things will be slowing down in 2012.  TEENS is recording a new album.  SHADES, Atomic Mama, Night Genes, and Owlright all have much-anticipated January releases.    Youth Lagoon has a huge spring tour coming up including dates in Australia, Japan, and all over Europe.  Oh yeah, we have giant music festival coming in March (TREEFORT).  Payette Brewing Co. has been kicking ass and taking names and will also have live music pretty much every weekend starting Jan. 20th.  Here at The C.O.T. we finally launched our official line of merchandise and will get our online store off the ground in the next few weeks.  Matt Jones of Audio Milk is "taking his talents" to a new endeavor called Deer Lodge, where he and up and coming Boise film maker Tyler T. Williams create mini-documentaries showing "artists in their natural elements."  Not to mention new bands seem to be popping up left and right.  As we said, there is a butt-load of cool stuff coming to and from Boise this year and it is our pleasure to share it with you as we go along.
In order to start your 2012 off on the right foot we have posted some newer songs and videos to transition you from the Christmas Spirit into The C.O.T. spirit.

Here's a double-dip from Finn Riggins.  Both tracks have been released in the last couple of months and are a nice little taste of what is on the horizon for one of Boise's most talented and established bands.

OLD EARZ is the new side project from David Wood of TEENS.  Word has it that there will be an E.P. coming soon.

"Cyber Me" is the first single off of Night Genes' upcoming album "Like The Blood," due out Jan. 31st.

This song has been out for a little while, but we felt it was important to share in lieu of Atomic Mama's debut E.P. "Bodies In The Sun," which comes out Jan. 24.

"Sun Path" is one of our favorite tracks off of Metaphoria the new album from Workin' On fire.  CD release Jan. 31st at The Record Exchange.

Tyler T. Williams does another stellar job, this time on the official video for Youth Lagoon's song July.

A cool little teaser video for Shades' upcoming album "Clear Motions."

The Art of Joshua Hon

Not only does Boise local Joshua Hon do some gnarly ink drawings, he also produces some killer music under the moniker "Epogy."  Below we've posted some of our favorite drawings of Hon's along with a mix of tracks by Epogy embedded in between.  This is exactly the type of stuff we love at The C.O.T. so if you are a talented artist in the Boise-area like Josh Hon then get in touch with us and we will do our best to share what you create.

Metaphoriacally Speaking

Workin' On Fire (Boise, ID)
Today we had the pleasure of sitting down with Boise band Workin' On Fire to discuss their new studio album "Metaphoria," which has recently been released digitally (iTunes, CD Baby, SoundCloud) and will be available on hardcopy at The Record Exchange January 31, 2012.  A lot of the buzz about this rock trio comes from the fact that they are just seniors in high school (Boise High and Timberline), but after meeting with frontman Austin Williamson and bassist Peter Maguire, it is clear that they possess the maturity as well as the talent to be heard and respected by anyone.  It was great hearing that these guys have a strong respect for the music of the past, drawing much of their inspiration from artists like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jim Morrison, and Slash from G n' R to name a few.  A little bit of Axle Rose can be heard in Williamson's vocals as well as a bit of the sound of the artists mentioned earlier, but the band has developed a style of their own on Metophoria, which is the band's third release.  Another admirable quality of WOF is their appreciation for the full "album," which is refreshing in a day when buying only one or two mp3s from an artist has become commonplace.  Metaphoria even has a secret song at the end to go along with a nice balance of electric and acoustic sounds.  Workin' On Fire is a talented young band that deserves your attention and support.  You can listen to the album, "Metaphoria," right here on The C.O.T via Sound Cloud.

New Single From Night Genes

Night Genes
Cyber Me by Night Genes

Cyber Me is the first single released off of the upcoming album "Like The Blood," Night Genes' second full-length album due out January 31st.  Night Genes is the brainchild of Eric Ingersoll, a Boise-native who has been playing music for a long, long time.  Many may recognized him as the former bass player for alt-blues band Smooth Old-Fashioned High (R.I.P.).  Night Genes' infancy was spent in the Boise scene, playing a several shows with some assistance on keys, maracas, and the tambourine from The C.O.T.'s own Streeter Johnson, and Russ Lodge on drums.  Soon Ingersoll decided he needed a change of scenery and moved to San Francisco where he teamed up with another Boisean, David McFadden-Elliott (The Shitty Osmonds), as well as adding some assistance from Amy Foote.  While the depth of Ingersoll's voice might be lead one to question if he went through puberty an extra time or two, it quickly grows on you as you listen.  The man is a true writer (that's actually what he does for a living) and you can easily see it in the stories he tells.  "Cyber Me," is a song about Ingersoll's ambivalent relationship with the internet as well as loneliness.  If you are new to Night Genes then below you can check some tracks from their first release "Two Phantoms And A Holy Ghost," available on iTunes.

Mostecelo

In preparation for The Big Shebang coming up December 23, we thought now would be a good time to introduce Boise band, Mostecelo, who will be playing a set during the event.  Mostecelo is the "darkly comic, sometimes serious, cross cultural music project of J. Rebeca Suarez."  Her album, "The Last Possible Tense," is excellent and can be heard below via her Bandcamp site where it is available for purchase for $11.  It is great to see a new female artist in the Boise scene, because to be honest, it is a bit of a sausage fest.  As mentioned before, Mostecelo will be performing next Friday evening (12/23) at The Big Shebang at Payette Brewing Co.

"The" Josh Gross

With the recent release of his new short fiction book, "Secrets & Lies," writer/comedian/musician Josh Gross continues to make his mark on the Boise arts scene.  Along with reporting for Boise Weekly, the Portland transplant seems to dabble in a little bit of everything, so we felt the need to share. Secrets & Lies is available in Boise at Hyde Park Books, Rediscovered Books, and Bricolage.
